Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary The sancturay which is not known to many people is a silent tourist attraction in the chettinad area.
The sanctuary is encompassing Periya Kollukudi Patti, Chinna Kollukudi Patti and Vettangudi Patti tanks extending to a total area of 38.4 ha. The only bird sanctuary located in the Sivaganga District. It was declared as sanctuary in June 1977.
Location The Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary is located at a distance of 51 Km from Madurai on Madurai - Melur-Tiruppathur road, in Sivagangai District. It is located in Vettangudi patti & Periya Kollukudi Patti village of Tiruppathur taluk, Sivagangai District.
Flora
The vegetation of the tank is dominated by prosopis; in few locations with babul and on the bund with Tamarind.
Fauna This is considered to be the natural breeding habitat for winter Migratory birds such as Open billed stork, White ibis, Grey herons, Night herons, Darters and Spoon bills. Snakebird (Darter)

The sanctuary is approachable by road. It is located 51 Kms. from Madurai on Madurai - Melur - Tirupathur road. Nearest Railway Stations are Karaikudi (32 KM). and Madurai (51 KM). The nearest Airport is Madurai. The best season to visit is November to February. Acccommodation The nearest accommodation facilities are available in Karaikudi, Tirupathur and Madurai.
